    IJM is seeking an innovative and servant-hearted media professional to tell the story of IJM’s model for change to the world and position the organization as a global leader in the fight to end modern day slavery, human trafficking and other forms of violence against the poor. IJM’s Manager, Media and Public Relations will play a critical role in shaping and executing IJM’s media relations efforts.


    The Media and Public Relations Manager will support the earned media and influencer strategies of the Global Advancement (GA) team at International Justice Mission. The candidate will have sound experience and knowledge of earned media working with journalists across all mediums as well as present tangible examples of his/her work garnering coverage. The Media and Public Relations Manager will work in close coordination with the Senior Manager, Global Media and PR, and VP, Global Brand and Communications to develop and execute on IJM global media strategy to support GA organizational goals. The candidate will be responsible for working across teams and departments to create and execute the U.S. media strategy by writing and proactively pitching stories and facilitating relationships with key outlets, reporters and editors. This position will also be responsible for drafting engaging and dynamic content for statements and press releases. Overall, this position will ensure that strategic media opportunities for IJM across all media platforms both globally and nationally are maximized. This role reports to the Senior Manager, Global Media and PR within the Global Brand & Communications team.


    The position is based at IJM's headquarters in the Arlington, VA area.


    • Work with team to develop and execute media relations strategies through brainstorming, coordination with the Senior Manager, Global Media and PR and the VP, Global Brand and Communications, and other departments within IJM; 
    • Assist in the development and lead in the execution of IJM’s local U.S. media outreach strategy to support a multiple city strategy;
    • Write and oversee the drafting of press releases, statements, content, briefing materials, quotes, blog posts, op-eds using IJM brand and copy guidelines;
    • Review drafts, copy, and messaging for consistency/accuracy from other departments within IJM and escalating to the Senior Manager, Global Media and PR, where appropriate;
    • Communicate media outreach plans and communicate upwards to managers about progress and success.
    • Respond to media inquiries in a timely manner and route to the appropriate IJM staff for review;
    • Coordinate all elements of proactive media opportunities, timely news announcements, special initiatives and the media element of organization-wide campaigns from start to finish;
    • Work with the Senior Manager to support top-tier media relations opportunities both in the U.S. and the field including but not limited to creating communications materials, serving as a liaison and coordinating logistics;
    • Position, pitch and place IJM in a variety of outlets including print, online, television and radio to enhance public awareness of the organization among target audiences;
    • Identify and target reporters/outlets to develop, grow and strengthen relationships with on behalf of IJM;
    • Proactively monitor industry news to inform team about important news of the day and formulate timely media opportunities and pitches;
    • Collaborate across departments to position IJM leadership as thought leaders in the industry, among other non-profit organizations and the business for-profit community; and
    • Pitch IJM stories at the local, regional and national level as well as niche and industry publications.


    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media relations, public relations or related field;
    • Minimum of five years’ experience managing communications campaigns and media strategy at a PR/marketing agency or corporate communications/PR team;
    • Demonstrated record of pitching and successfully landing stories (portfolio samples required);
    • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office;
    • Experience with MeltWater, Cision or similar monitoring platform preferred;
    • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously to completion;
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skill with the ability to tailor the communication style to the audience and situation;
    • Capacity to think critically, strategically and creatively;
    • Ability to distill and disseminate complex issues into compelling copy and news pitches;
    • Experience of developing and implementing media relations strategies for a similar organization;
    • Experience of utilizing traditional tools (press, networking, etc.) as well as new tools (social media, twitter, blogs, etc.) in order to maximize media coverage and awareness;
    • The ability to cultivate new media relationships and maintain existing ones;
    • A good understanding and overview of the media landscape and its workings;
    • Able to work together with colleagues to pool skills, ideas and resources to achieve objectives and resolve problems;
    • Able to work successfully across other departments within IJM;
    • Ability to create, influence and advise PR strategy across the organization;
    • Ability to communicate at all levels and to adapt your communication style to suit the audience;
    • Ability to translate strategic objectives into practical and achievable plans; and
    • Able to consider the impact/risk of decisions on other areas of the organization and adjust accordingly.
