The Need

We’re International Justice Mission, and we believe that justice for the poor is possible. As the world’s largest anti-slavery organization, our mission is to protect the poor from violence by rescuing victims, bringing criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts.

Motivated by God’s call to seek justice for the oppressed, we believe that the way we work is as important as the results we achieve. We are a global community that cares for one another. We value joy and celebration, and we strive to provide professional excellence to all those we serve.

IJM is looking for a Proposal Writer to join our Global Advancement Resources team in Washington, DC. The Proposal Writer is responsible for developing compelling proposals and reports that engage individuals, families and their foundations to support IJM’s work. The ideal candidate will be an articulate and creative writer, responsive to changing donor needs and priorities, and exceptionally attentive to details and deadlines. The position will be IJM’s in-house expert on the development, writing, and submission of private (non-government) proposals and reports, setting IJM’s global standards for proposal writing and coaching others to meet those standards.

Proposal and Report Writing

  • Provide compelling reports to supporters to celebrate what their giving has accomplished around the world;
  • Gather, edit, and explain budget and financial materials to accompany proposals and reports, as needed;
  • Evaluate and speak into IJM’s proposal and report development process from start to finish, including building new processes to gain efficiencies as IJM grows;
  • Serve as the organization’s expert on private proposals and reports, setting IJM’s global standards for narrative writing and visual presentation and coaching other writers to follow these standards and processes;
  • Train and coach new fundraising staff on funding pitches that best meet the passions of donors and the needs of IJM; and
  • Process funding agreements in coordination with multiple internal teams.

Global Resource Development and Coordination

  • Create shareable fundraising templates and other standard content so that materials are globally consistent, visually appealing, and best serve each audience.
  • Develop and equip the organization with standardized language about organization-wide information—such as IJM’s history, operations, board and partnerships.
  • Work closely with IJM’s Finance team to ensure that all financial information sent externally to supporters is accurate and understandable.
  • Manage the process of gathering and sharing standardized costs of IJM’s global work, to help fundraising staff articulate to donors the impact of various giving levels.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience required;
  • 3-5 years of work experience, including at least 2 years of successful proposal or fundraising writing;
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex information in a simple, concise manner;
  • Demonstrated experience managing and executing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with minimal oversight;
  • Experience coaching and reviewing the writing work of others; and
  • High level of proficiency Microsoft Office required.

  • Self-starter with strong initiative;
  • Curiosity to explore and understand IJM’s work in order to create the most compelling content possible for donors;
  • Disciplined with priorities and highly attentive to details;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills;
