The Senior Payroll Specialist performs duties necessary for the accurate calculation of wages, deductions and withholdings as well as the maintenance of records. The Senior Payroll Specialist acts as a resource and provides leadership to Payroll Specialists.

This position is based in the Washington D.C. area and reports to the Payroll Manager.

• Reviews, analyzes and verifies payroll reports and documents for accuracy; makes necessary adjustments or corrections through journal entries or other established procedures
• Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of payroll policies and procedures to analyze and respond to complex matters
• Recommends or participates in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations; assists in coordinating approved changes within payroll processing system; updates affected policy/procedure manuals
• Researches and interprets a variety of complex technical information in response to inquiries
• Maintains accurate recordkeeping practices ensuring full audit compliance
• Stays up to date on federal, state and local laws and regulations involving payroll to advises, interpret and provide direction to management and staff on organization guidelines and procedures
• Authorizes, reviews and/or enters payroll transactions and related data ensuring an accurate paycheck
• Researches, analyzes and resolves difficult or advanced technical problems or questions presented by co-workers
• Coordinates schedules and tracks progress of specialized work projects and/or department functions
• Acts as a subject matter expert and/or resource to others in payroll processing, specifically technology, finance and human resources.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience and education
• Minimum of 5 years of work experience processing payroll
• Demonstrated knowledge of payroll principles, practices, regulations, and procedures
• Demonstrated knowledge of basic accounting practices and procedures
• Demonstrated knowledge of applicable state and federal payroll and related tax regulations, legislation and guidelines including, but not limited to: writs of garnishment, child support, levies, subpoenas, non-resident alien and U.S. tax treaties
• Demonstrated knowledge of the practice, methods and techniques of process improvement
• Ability to evaluate and analyze technical payroll activities
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written
• Experience preparing detailed reports
• Experience performing detailed computations
• Experience of delivering results, meeting commitments, and justifying others’ trust.
