    IJM is seeking a Director of Data Science to serve as a key player on a new justice data science team to guide investment in and management of its global programming portfolio. This position will lead a team who will effectively and actively ensure the conversion of data into value that will further IJM’s mission. Position will be based at IJM’s headquarters, will deploy periodically to program sites, and will report to the Vice President of Program Design, Research, and Evaluation.


    Data analysis & usage

    • Find, organize, analyze, interpret, and share data to improve the quality of strategic decisions;
    • Analyze internal and external datasets to discover hidden patterns and actionable insights, in cooperation and consultation with other analysts and staff, to solve problems and release new operational capabilities;
    • Develop data visualizations and other data products to heighten the understanding and use of data in decision making;
    • Develop and report on key divisional metrics, in cooperation and consultation with other staff, to identify efficiencies and improve performance;
    • Develop trust with key users and confidence in data by clear communication on the reliability of and limits to analytical products and insights;
    • Develop best practices for data understanding, data preparation, data modeling, evaluating results and deployment of models to aid key users’ ability to derive value from data;
    • Develop competencies and training materials for global staff on data literacy as a foundation for optimal data use;
    • Build out organizational capacity in data analytics to increase key users’ ability to derive value from data; and
    • Build tools that ease key users’ access to and ability to derive value from data.

    Data systems, governance, infrastructure, and quality

    • Help ensure IJM’s data systems, infrastructure, and business processes facilitate accurate and timely data analysis to meet organizational and key users’ needs;
    • Lead on and ensure data quality by the development of data quality metrics, delivery of data quality training, and oversight of a data quality assurance assessment framework;
    • Collaborate with IT leadership to establish data policies, processes, and standards including enforcement of data quality, security, and management concepts; and
    • Engage with relevant external experts and forums to maintain awareness of data science developments and take advantage of collaboration opportunities.

    Team Leadership

    • Provide technical leadership a team of dispersed data science team;
    • Foster a culture of spiritual health and integrity by setting an example of mature, authentic Christian discipleship;
    • May be required to supervise a team of employees;
    • Ensure spending of allocated funds in accordance with IJM’s budgetary and stewardship principles and policies; and
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, IJM policies and best practices.


    • Masters of Science in Computer Science, Math or Scientific Computing, Statistics, or advanced degree in any scientific discipline or any equivalent experience;
    • Minimum 7 years of experience in Data Analytics, Machine Learning or Business Intelligence/Analytics with 5 years experiencing managing teams;
    • Experience with large, disparate, and messy datasets; and with the integration of multiple datasets;
    • Experience with finding, organizing, cleaning, processing, and analyzing data to solve problems and to reveal opportunities;
    • Mastery in at least one programming languages such as Python, Scala, Java, Perl or similar language;
    • Knowledge of distributed computing tools;
    • Ability to work across different functional teams and to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences at all levels;
    • Ability to visualize, organize, present, and explain data/insights with ease; and
    • Ability to work in a cross cultural context highly desired.
