    We are looking for a thoughtful and thorough leader for our Internal Communications team. This is a new team, critical to equipping our growing organization to scale and connect our colleagues around the world. Working closely with employees, key stakeholders and leadership, our Director, Internal Communications will establish Organizational Communication channels, tools, and messaging strategies. This leadership role will be essential in crafting global organizational messages to keep staff informed and up to date on internal developments. It will also be charged with ensuring a robust crisis communication plan is in place for employees. Making sure colleagues around the world are connected, inspired, and informed is critical to our ability to serve and care for our teams well, and create a culture of thriving people. We think this is a big deal – the biggest – and we want to welcome a talented communicator to our team who can build and guide our internal organizational communication function to deliver a best-in-class experience for our people.


    The position is based in Washington, DC, and reports to the Chief People Officer.


    Build a compelling strategy and execute it well

    • Establish IJM’s internal communications function and strategy to support a global organization working in multiple cultural contexts;
    • Plan, edit and write content for a variety of internal communications forums, such as a staff intranet, monthly magazine or regular emails;
    • Identify effective methods/tools to use social media to effectively communicate with colleagues;
    • Assess and select effective online, cloud-based communication tool – for example, an intranet application, slack – and roll out in such a way as to encourage and foster organization-wide adoption; and
    • Work closely with leaders to craft and define meaningful communication strategies for appropriate divisional audiences.

    Create awareness of and openness for change

    • Work closely with key change efforts across the world to ensure organizational readiness for new initiatives, and foster successful communication of projects and outcomes to employees and stakeholders; and
    • Assess needs and ensure communication tools, timing and methods best serve the creation of a thriving workforce that feels heard, supported and engaged through timely and meaningful communication.

    Connect the Organization through Communication

    • Draft messages, scripts, and/or talking points for senior executives related to employee presentations – whether in written or spoken form;
    • Ensure internal communications messages are consistent across all channels, teams and divisions, as needed;
    • Ensure internal communication messages are consistent with external communication messages;
    • Define and deliver the internal communication plan and response to crisis situations;
    • Advise senior leadership of organizational developments or employee needs that may warrant active messaging and guide associated outcomes, as needed; and
    • Define, schedule and deliver quarterly All Hands to share updates and news from all divisions with all staff, aligned with the timing of quarterly Prayer Retreats.

    Tell Our Story Well

    • Act as consultant and advisor for employee communications and organizational updates to ensure messages are consistent across divisions, and leaders are fully equipped with the tools and narratives needed to lead the organization well through an extended season of change and rapid growth;
    • Collaborate with leadership and staff to proactively source, write and recommend key internal messages and prayer requests to create an environment in which people can thrive;
    • Research and implement annual employee connection campaigns – telling our personal stories, in addition to our client stories from the field, to create a connected and vibrant global culture that gives us perspective of our colleagues as the real people we are; and
    • Write compelling messages, blog posts and updates for leaders and field work updates to share our stories across locations and teams.

    General Management

    • Design, share and implement a global communications plan and calendar, to ensure messages are sequenced and planned and provide employees space to absorb information and act on requests;
    • Attend monthly forums and update leadership on progress of internal communications efforts, including completed or upcoming initiatives;
    • Define and provide a framework by which colleagues can request organizational messaging, and advise them on best practices to achieve their communications goals;
    • Manage the Internal Communications budget and team;
    • Act as expert guide and teacher for leaders and managers so all have excellent communication skills and capabilities as they lead their teams; and
    • Respond to feedback from staff and adjust communications content accordingly.

    Travel/Schedule Requirements

    • This position may require 10-20% international travel annually, and may require outside of typical work hours meetings to engage with global staff. 


    Required Skills and Experience 

    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Marketing or a related field;
    • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in employee communications, organizational development, business communications, writing (news writing, feature story writing, and/or fundraising writing), internal messaging development, and editing;
    • Portfolio of excellent work that demonstrates expertise, creativity and ability to change the “voice” of the writing to fit varying audiences;
    • Demonstrated experience managing and executing multiple projects in a fast-paced, cross-cultural environment with minimal oversight;
    • Good working knowledge of communication tools and creative/editing software
