The Need

Note: Interns and Fellows are required to attend an Orientation Week in Washington, D.C. before deploying.

The English Language (ESL) fellowships will involve most of the following responsibilities. Other relevant duties will be assigned by the Field Office Director or supervisor.

  • Assess the individual language needs of the staff;
  • Design an ESL framework that significantly increases the English proficiency among key IJM leaders and staff;
  • Implement the designed ESL program including one-on-one tutoring and general staff programs;
  • Design and conduct a baseline, midline and endline assessment to measure progress; and
  • The project should be replicable in other field offices where English proficiency is lacking.


Positions may be available in: Manila, Philippines; Pampanga, Philippines; Cebu, Philippines; Chiang Mai, Thailand; Bangalore, India; Kolkata, India; Chennai, India; Delhi, India; Mumbai, India; Kampala, Uganda; Gulu, Uganda; Accra, Ghana; La Paz, Bolivia; Guatemala City, Guatemala; or Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Not every position will be available in every office.


IJM's Fellowship opportunities vary every session and look different in every office. Fellows generally will assist a specific person or team. The positions involve the described tasks and responsibilities as well as other relevant duties that may be assigned by the Field Office Director or Supervisor.

Critical Qualities, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • ESL Certified;
  • At least 1-3 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Flexibility, sustained positive attitude, ability to work well in a cross-cultural team; and
  • Experience designing and/or developing ESL curriculum/programs preferred but not required.
